Sahlab: A Traditional Arabic Hot Chocolate

Ingredients
  • Orgeat syrup (1/4 cup), Milk (1 1/2 cups), Rose water (1 tsp), Ground cinnamon (1 tsp), Ground cardamom (1/2 tsp), Salt (1/4 tsp), Cornstarch (2 tbsp)
  • Rose petals for garnish
Preparation Steps
  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the rose water and orgeat syrup. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
  2. Add the milk, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt to the saucepan. Whisk until well combined and the mixture is smooth.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and a splash of the hot milk mixture until smooth. Return the saucepan to low heat and gradually add the cornstarch mixture, whisking constantly.
  4. Continue cooking for 2-3 minutes, or until the mixture thickens to your liking.
  5. Strain the sahlab into mugs or cups. Serve immediately, garnished with rose petals if desired.
